About Asbestos
According to the Government Health and Safety Executive (HSE), asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous material that was a very popular building material in the 1950s, notably for insulation materials. Commonly grouped into two mineral types, serpentine and amphibole, asbestos can cause a variety of life-threatening diseases such as lung cancer and Mesothelioma.
In 1999, the government banned the manufacturing and distribution of all asbestos-containing products and earlier in 1985 amphibole type was banned, but the health risks of asbestos continue to be a major public health concern.
It is commonly found in the form of fibres that are embedded in building materials such as insulation, floor and ceiling tiles, and roofing materials. Asbestos exposure can lead to serious health risks, so it is important to take proper precautions if you suspect that a given material could contain asbestos.
